Home / Chaka Camp
Chaka Camp is a semi-permanent mobile camp that roams within the Serengeti ecosystem. The name “Chaka” originates from Swahili, meaning “bush,” and it encapsulates the essence of the camp—providing guests with an authentic and intimate bush experience set amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the pristine Serengeti wilderness. Chaka Camp’s mobility allows it to move twice a year, ensuring that its guests are strategically positioned to witness the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration.
This unique camp offers an opportunity to connect with nature and immerse oneself in the untamed beauty of the Serengeti, providing a memorable and intimate safari experience amid the splendor of the African bush.
Chaka Camp’s unique design allows it to be lightweight and easily movable, making it a seasonal home in two distinct locations within the Serengeti ecosystem. Here’s a breakdown of Chaka Camp’s seasonal locations and what you can expect:
1. Ndutu Area (December to March): During this period, Chaka Camp is situated in the Ndutu area, which is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just south of Serengeti National Park. This is when the Great Wildebeest Migration moves in and out of the Ndutu region. The area around Lakes Ndutu and Masek becomes a hub of wildlife activity, with nearly two million wildebeest and zebra traversing the landscape. Ndutu is also home to a variety of predators such as cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and even occasional wild dog sightings. February marks the calving season when thousands of wildebeest give birth each day, offering a spectacular opportunity to witness this natural wonder and the resulting predator-prey interactions.
2. Northern Serengeti (Late May to October): From late May through October, Chaka Camp relocates to the Northern Serengeti. Here, the camp is strategically positioned near the Mara River, allowing easy access to multiple river crossing points. During this time, the wildebeest migration crisscrosses the Mara River as it moves back and forth between Tanzania and Kenya. This season provides numerous opportunities to witness dramatic river crossings, with the added thrill of encountering crocodiles, hippos, and big cats in the vicinity.
Chaka Camp, while relatively simple compared to some of the more luxurious options in the region, offers a comfortable safari experience. The eight tents feature flush toilets and safari bucket showers, along with spacious private verandahs offering stunning views of the Serengeti ecosystem. The camp includes separate dining and lounge tents, a small bar, and a library.
Chaka Camp is known for being one of the best-value luxury camps in the Serengeti. Staying here allows you to enjoy game drives in open vehicles, romantic bush dinners under the starry African sky, and an authentic and intimate bush experience.
For travelers with limited time, a Northern circuit itinerary combining Chaka Camp with other destinations is ideal. Consider a week-long circuit that includes a night in Arusha, two nights by the Ngorongoro Crater, and three or four nights at Chaka Camp. This budget-friendly option offers an authentic safari experience in some of Africa’s most renowned regions.
If you have more time and budget flexibility, adding on a visit to Ruaha or Selous in the southern part of Tanzania is an excellent choice. Similar camps in these regions, such as Lake Manze or Mdonya Old River Camp, provide the same bush-camp feel that makes Chaka Camp special. After a week of safari adventures, you might also be ready for some relaxation by the beach. While the North of Tanzania is not as budget-friendly or time-efficient for reaching Zanzibar compared to the South, it’s still possible to combine a Northern itinerary with a beach lodge like Pongwe Beach Hotel or Zuri Zanzibar to unwind and cap off your unforgettable safari journey.
Chaka Camp in the Serengeti is a hidden gem. The camp's blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, set against the backdrop of the Serengeti's natural beauty, is simply enchanting. The personalized service and thrilling game drives make it an unforgettable safari destination. Highly recommended for those seeking an authentic and intimate Serengeti experience.
